There is no denying the fact that sports teams are a big part of many people’s college experience. Georgia is home to several professional and college sports teams. The state has a part in practically all team sports, though football is clearly the staple sport of Georgia, as it is the entire South. If you’re a sport’s buff looking for a great state to attend school, whether you want to go as a participant or spectator, Georgia has a lot to offer.

Atlanta Falcons (NFL)

The Falcons have been apart of the NFL since 1965. The have a record of 298–402–6. They also had four division championships and in 1999 they went all the way to the Super Bowl. The Atlanta Falcons are a well-loved southern football team with millions of fans who come from all the over the world to see them play.

Atlanta Hawks (NBA)

The franchise that would eventually go on to become the Atlanta Hawks began in 1946 as the Buffalo Bisons. After a string of transfers, sales, and moves the team was eventually purchased in 1968 by an Atlanta real estate developed and they’ve called the peach state home ever since. The team has one a single championship, 4 conference titles, and 3 division titles, along with countless individual awards from the NBA.

Atlanta Braves

The Atlanta Braves are a professional baseball team located in Atlanta, Georgia. The Braves are the predominant professional southern baseball team. They are also one of the most popular baseball teams in the nation, with millions of fans and wide appeal that has garnered them the nickname “America’s Team”. In their long history the Brave have won three World Series Titles and multiple Pennants.

Georgia Bulldogs

The Georgia Bulldogs make up the popular college sport teams for the University of Georgia. In all the University of Georgia is host to nineteen different sport teams including football, tennis, basketball, and more. Former Bulldogs of note include Vince Dooley, Wally Butts, and Howell Hollis. With the University of Georgia being one of the most popular universities in the area it isn’t hard to imagine the massive following that many of these varsity sports teams have. The Georgia Bulldogs Football Team, currently coached by Mark Richt holds a century old traditional rivalry with Alabama based college Auburn University.

Mercer Bears

The Mercer Bears are the collective name of the NCAA approved sports division of Mercer University. Mercer is the only private university in the state of Georgia to boast an NCAA approved program. Mercer is host to eight men’s teams, nine women’s teams, and one co-educational rifle team. Some of the popular team sports at Mercer University include baseball, basketball, lacrosse, and a football team that was recently reinstated after a 70 year hiatus.
